Govt must outline plan for Ireland West Airport Knock – Calleary

Fianna Fáil TD for Mayo Dara Calleary says the Government must stop delaying and publish a plan for Ireland West Airport Knock.  Seven county councils across the West and North West have approved plans to fund a stake in the airport following the EU Commission’s decision to green light the Regional Airport Programme.

Deputy Calleary explained, “I have been working closely with Fianna Fáil Councillors in Mayo as well as our party colleagues in Donegal, Leitrim, Sligo, Roscommon and Galway City and County Councils over the past number of months to come up with a funding plan for Ireland West Airport Knock.  I want to thank all the local representatives that were involved in this process for their encouragement and support and ultimately for approving the decision to approve funding for a stake in Knock airport.

“The ball is now firmly in the Government’s court and it needs to unveil its plan for the airport without delay.  Local authorities in the West, led by Mayo County Council, have demonstrated leadership and ambition in pushing forward with a plan for the airport.  Unfortunately the Government is lacking in both of these qualities when it comes to showing their support for Knock.

“It speaks volumes that Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe has failed to visit Ireland West Airport even once during his term in office.  This is a clear indication of this Government’s lack of commitment to Knock.  Ireland West is a significant employer in Mayo, and serves as a gateway into this country for hundreds of thousands of passengers every year. It is a vital part of the tourism infrastructure in the region and a credible plan must be forthcoming without delay”.  FF delegation at Ireland West Airport
