Full assessment of Ballina pipe network urgently needed – Calleary

Fianna Fáil TD for Mayo Dara Calleary has called on Irish Water to undertake a full assessment of the condition of the pipe network in Ballina as a matter of urgency.  It follows a number of major bursts in the town in recent days and months.

Deputy Calleary commented, “There is obviously a major problem with the pipe network in Ballina, which resulted in two significant bursts in the town centre.  A number of premises were flooded and homes in the town were left without a water supply while the problem was being fixed.  This is an unprecedented level of disruption and needs to be addressed without delay.

“While I welcome the announcement by Irish Water of a €700,000 investment to replace a 700-metre section of the mains trunk in the town centre, on Bridge Street and on to Bunree Junction, there needs to be a full assessment of the pipe network across the town and its surroundings to ensure that the infrastructure is up to standard.

“There is obviously a serious fault in the existing water system.  This needs to be fully investigated and assessed and proper investment must be secured to fix whatever problems exist.  Irish Water has a duty to the people of Ballina to ensure that there is a fully functioning water service.  Further investment is needed and should be secured as a matter of priority”.Water
