FF calls on Govt to intervene as Lufthansa Technik considers closure

LufthansaFianna Fáil Spokesperson on Jobs Dara Calleary has called on the Government to intervene as aircraft maintenance firm Lufthansa Technik considers closure.

Deputy Calleary said, “400 highly skilled high quality jobs are at risk here. These are jobs that the local economy and the Irish aviation sector cannot afford to lose.  The Government has a duty to intervene and explore all options for preserving the future of aircraft maintenance in Ireland.

“Just yesterday, the Taoiseach was out announcing hundreds of new airline jobs as a result of a Ryanair expansion.  At a time when the airline industry in Ireland is growing significantly, it’s difficult to understand how Dublin can be at risk of losing its position as a base for aircraft maintenance.

“I am asking the Taoiseach and the Jobs Minister Richard Bruton to put the same energy into saving Irish jobs at Lufthansa Technik as they put into jobs announcements. This is not just about one company leaving the Irish market – it’s about the risk that Ireland could lose its aircraft maintenance  sector entirely, despite the fact that we have a strong skills base here.

“My thoughts are with the 400 staff and their families at this extremely difficult and worrying time.  I am urging the Government to make contact with management immediately and to ensure that the staff are given every support possible.”
