Bangor FF to host ‘Save our Small Schools’ Public Meeting

Charlie McConalogue T.D., the Party’s Spokesperson on Education will be the guest speaker.

Chairman of the Comhairle Cheantair John Cosgrove explained that the Fianna Fáil organisation were hosting the meeting due to the concerns being expressed throughout Erris in relation to the future of the peninsula’s small schools.

“This Government has adopted a policy of severe harm to the future of small schools with pupil/teacher ratios rising and as a result schools in the Barony of Erris are going to lose teachers and resources.

“On top of this more and more primary schools across Co Mayo are falling into unmanageable debt as a result of a series of cuts introduced by the Education Minister Ruairí Quinn over the past two years, particularly the scrapping of the Minor Works Grant last year..

“Teachers and parents throughout Erris have expressed their concerns about the deepening financial problems at their school. The loss of the minor works grant has pushed many schools over the edge

“We are delighted that Charlie McConalogue has agreed to attend a special meeting to discuss these concerns. It is an open public meeting and all are welcome,”he said.

The meeting takes place on Thursday May 2 at 8.30pm in The Talk of the Town.
