Govt abandons Mayo communities that have lost garda stations
The Justice Minister has admitted that he has no idea what steps have been taken to address the security concerns of Mayo communities following the loss of their local garda station. In reply to a Parliamentary Questions from Fianna Fáil, Minister Shatter said he doesn’t have any information about new community alert schemes or new garda clinics that may have been opened in Co Mayo or any part of the country following his widespread closure of community garda stations. Mayo Fianna Fáil Deputy Dara Calleary has said this demonstrates Minister Shatter’s total lack of commitment to those communities in Co Mayo that lost their local garda station last year. “It […]

Targeted attack on elderly must stop
Mayo Deputy Dara Calleary has called on the Government to stop its targeted attack on older people and people with disabilities. The Fianna Fáil TD has condemned new changes to housing grants for people with disabilities. “Make no mistake about it – what we are seeing here is another series of underhand cuts to older people and people with disabilities. Whatever way the Government tries to spin it, this means that less people in Co Mayo will be eligible for support to allow them to stay living at home,” said Deputy Calleary. “These schemes provide vital support to help older people adapt their homes to their physical circumstances. The latest […]

Govt engaged in arrogant and misleading campaign on Pylons – FF
Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Jobs and Enterprise Dara Calleary has accused the Government of engaging in an arrogant and highly misleading campaign on Pylons. “The comments from the Taoiseach and the Minister Pat Rabbitte over the past 24 hours show just out of touch this Government has become. It clearly demonstrates that the Government has absolutely no intention of taking on board the genuine concerns of communities and intends to just press ahead with the large scale construction of overhead lines regardless of any objections,” said Deputy Calleary. “The Taoiseach’s outrageous linking of emigration to this debate nothing more than scaremongering. We have seen the Taoiseach employ this kind of […]

Mayo loses out in IDA investment – Calleary
Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Jobs Dara Calleary has expressed concerns about the lack of IDA investment in Co Mayo over the past two years. It comes after IDA today published figures showing a net increase of 6,570 jobs created in IDA supported companies last year. Deputy Calleary said that while Dublin and other urban bases are benefiting, Co Mayo continues to lose out. The Fianna Fáil Deputy commented, “This report shows the success of the IDA when it focuses on investment in a certain area. The IDA must be commended for supporting the creation of thousands of jobs last year, building on the years of work and investment in growing […]

Calleary pays tribute to local emergency workers
Mayo Deputy Dara Calleary has paid tribute to the emergency services in Co Mayo as efforts continue to tackle severe flooding along the west coast. “We have seen our local gardaí, fire service, civil defence and community volunteers go above and beyond the call of duty in very difficult circumstances over the past number of days,” said Deputy Calleary. “Our local emergency workers must be commended for their swift and thorough response to severe flooding that has caused disruption and damage to homes, businesses, public areas and amenities in Ballina, Belmullet, Newport, Westport and other parts of the county. They must be given every support and resource necessary at a […]

Govt penalises Mayo schools with book rental schemes
The Government has confirmed to Mayo Deputy Dara Calleary that it intends to penalise the schools that made sacrifices to introduce their own school book rental schemes by not providing them with any funding for the schemes. In reply to a Parliamentary Question from Deputy Calleary, the Minister for Education Ruairí Quinn said his Department’s school book rental scheme will not be available to those schools that have established their own schemes. It means that these schools, that fundraised heavily and took money from other areas of their school budget to provide such a scheme, are losing out on significant State funding. Deputy Calleary explained, “This is disgraceful discrimination against […]

Speech of Dara Calleary TD, FF Dáil Motion on Eirgrid Grid 25 proposals
I wish to thank my party colleague Michael Moynihan for putting his motion and for allowing the house the opportunity to discuss an issue that is causing serious concern and division across the country. It is regrettable that the government, in spite of the Minister not ruling out a potential independent enquiry, will divide the house this evening even though many members of the government parties support the requests for the various Grid 25 projects to be placed underground. The Minister’s has acknowledged that the motion has raised “important issues”, but his rationale for opposing it is that the consultation process is still underway and has been extended. The difficulty […]

Pfizer job cuts another blow to healthcare manufacturing sector
The Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Jobs Dara Calleary has raised concerns that the government is sleepwalking through an emerging crisis in the healthcare manufacturing sector after three major employers announced job cuts in less than a week. “The loss of 150 jobs at Pfizer in Newbridge comes as another blow to the healthcare manufacturing sector in Ireland. Pfizer is a major employer in one of the most high value sectors in this country. This is an extremely difficult day for the staff in Newbridge and their families, particularly in the lead up to Christmas,” said Deputy Calleary. “Pfizer is the third company in the healthcare manufacturing sector to announce large […]

Baxter job cuts a major blow to Mayo economy
Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Jobs Dara Calleary has said the news that one of Co Mayo’s largest employers is cutting its workforce in Castlebar comes as a major blow to the local economy. Deputy Calleary said, “My first thoughts are with the staff at Baxter in Castlebar and their families. This news is particularly upsetting in the lead up to Christmas. “The staff must be must be given every support possible as decisions are made about voluntary redundancies. Baxter has been an excellent employer in Co Mayo for decades. Many of the staff will have worked there for years. Everything must be done to ensure that they are offered redundancy […]

Calleary welcomes jobs announcement in Mayo, Calls for greater focus on job creation in Western region
Fianna Fáil Jobs Spokesperson Dara Calleary has welcomed confirmation of 150 new jobs at Northgate Information Solutions in Castlebar. The Mayo Deputy commented, “This is a welcome boost for the county and the Castlebar area in particular. Great credit is due to the Enterprise and Investment Unit in Mayo County Council, which played a key role in securing this expansion. “We need to see more of this type of enterprise investment in Co Mayo and the Western region as a whole. The recovery in employment in this region is lagging behind Dublin and Cork, and much of the new jobs we have seen in the West are concentrated in Galway. […]
