Beef farmers being held to ransom by processors – Calleary

Post Image

Fianna Fáil TD for Mayo Dara Calleary is warning that beef farmers are facing another price crash this winter as processors introduce new penalties on Irish stock.  It’s just over a year since farmers were hit with massive price cuts as factories began changing specifications and refusing to slaughter cattle. Deputy Calleary commented, “Beef farmers are only beginning to get back on their feet having survived the beef crisis.  Now they’re being hit with an unfair raft of cuts by British processors who are discriminating against Irish producers.  These big factories have reverted to the practices which led to the crisis two years ago and are putting farmers in an […]

Nothing new in Budget to bridge regional employment imbalance

Post Image

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Dara Calleary has said the Government’s budget will do little to inspire confidence in its ability to spread the recovery to communities in all regions.  Deputy Calleary explained, “A two tier recovery has taken hold with job creation concentrating growth unequally across Ireland. The latest KBC Bank Ireland/ESRI index of consumer sentiment for September points to an economic recovery still “remote” for most households. The 5 year IDA regional property programme comes too little too late and represents a carefully choreographed move taken on the precipice of an election. “I welcome the fact that the budget contains some policy proposals that Fianna Fáil […]

Deputy Calleary commented, “The latest round of GLAS applications, which opened this week, will see farmers receiving payments which are much lower than those available under the first round.  In fact, some farmers could stand to lose up to €2,000 as a result of the cut in the […]

Post Image

Fianna Fáil TD for Mayo Dara Calleary says the party’s new agriculture policy will ensure that farmers are given a fair deal when it comes to pricing and farm profitability.  The strategy, “Securing fair process and increased profitability for farmers”, demonstrates Fianna Fáil’s commitment to family farming and seeks to protect the viability of these important businesses. Deputy Calleary explains, “Family farming is at the heart of the Irish agriculture sector, however over the past four years essential supports have been cut and farmers have been left exposed to market volatility.  This Government has failed to protect smaller farmers, instead bringing in overcomplicated and bureaucracy heavy schemes.  The beef genomics […]
